Archaeological sites and ancient monuments

Protecting archaeological sites

Camden has one designated ancient monument, Boadicea’s mound on Hampstead Heath, which is managed by the City of London Corporation.

The history of Camden shows it is likely that archaeological remains will be found elsewhere in the borough.

The information below will help you understand:

  • what our role is in protecting archaeological sites and ancient monuments within the borough
  • how we work with other organisations to protect, preserve and enhance sites of archaeological interest and their settings.

What is our role in protecting archaeological sites and ancient monuments?

We seek to protect, preserve and enhance sites of archaeological interest and their settings. Sites which have been designated as ancient monuments have legal protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. They are inspected on a regular basis by Historic England (formerly English Heritage).

We consult with and are guided by Historic England's Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service on the archaeological implications of developments. This is especially within priority areas identified in GLAAS’s Archaeological Priority Areas Appraisal for Camden.

Where can I find out what other archaeological sites and ancient monuments are found across London?

Historic England has a Greater London Historic Environment Record. This holds information on almost 72,000 historical and archaeological sites and listed buildings from across London's 33 boroughs.
