Road Adoption

Roads not maintained at public expense

A 'private street' is a road which is not maintained at public expense. This means that we, as a highway authority, are under no obligation to carry out repairs or cleansing to the street, even though it could be a public right of way to which highway and traffic law can be applied.

If Camden Council take ownership of a ‘private street’ it is called road adoption. The street is then referred to as a 'public highway'.

Carriageways, footways, verges and footpaths serving new developments may be adopted by us and maintained at public expense provided that they have been constructed in accordance with our standards and specifications.
